An Open Letter To Steve Brookstein.

Dear Steve,

Very few people know who you are. In case you’ve also forgotten, I’ll remind you too. You won the first ever X Factor in 2004, and released a Phil Collins cover (Against All Odds), which failed to make Christmas number one, but just about managed to climb the charts to the top spot the following week.

Your first album also managed to clinch the number one spot, and sold relatively well, with 250,000 copies leaving the shelves. However, following this album, SONY BMG dropped you, and you split from Simon Cowell.

You decided to set up your own record label and release your second single, ‘Fighting butterflies’ independently. This single didn’t  make the UK Top 75. You also chose to bring out a second album, ’40,000 Things’. That didn’t make the UK Charts either.

Since then, you’ve lived the high life of performing in Pizza Expresses and Cafe Neros across the country, while also becoming an international superstar by performing on the odd cruise ship now and then.

I understand your bitterness, I really do. If anyone has the right to declare, ‘Life is unfair’, it’s surely you. Not anybody living in a third world country, not anybody suffering with a long-term illness… No, no, it’s definitely you, someone who simply isn’t good enough to make a living out of singing.

The events that sparked this outburst of mine, were your tweets aimed at Louis Tomlinson, of One Direction:

‘Congratulations to Louis Tomlinson on his record deal. Luckiest man in music.’

‘There should be an enquiry in to show fixing. He is shockingly terrible. It’s like les dawson comedy bad.’
(I could have corrected your punctuation, but I thought maybe you didn’t want to use capitals for a name?)

Then there were your tweets to Louis’ mum:

‘Get the poor lad some singing lessons for Christmas. A couple of dozen at least.’

‘I also think friends and family should tell him that he can’t sing. Don’t blame me for his short comings.’

‘Take my advice. Get the lad singing lessons. He needs loads.’

Following the response to your tweets, Mr Brookstein, you have the audacity to claim you are being bullied, and move to your more personal twitter account full of your true fans. And, as if to emphasise my point all along, that account has just 62 followers.

I am not One Direction’s biggest fan. Far from it. Yet I find it highly amusing to think that you, a failed singer, known to many (By many, I mean people who still remember who you are) as ‘The Biggest Reality Flop’, take it upon yourself to advise others how to become a success in music.

I eagerly await your reply,

Josh Eves.

  1. mmmm I take it you can sing then Josh? lol xxx

You need a slap you little freak. You have no idea what you are talking about.
Good example of the future of the country though, well done… you wrote all this because of his 1 directions tweets? They are manufactured, they cant even find a harmony between them, 2 have decent voices i admit (Louis not being one of them, did u see his audition?), but its not the best talent the country has to offer. Other countries are laughing at us. Check out Jessie J. Thats talent, that is true British talent we can be proud of.
Scary thing is the boys will do well, and good luck to them. They are nice kids. But dont pretend it has anything to do with music. its about commercial manufactured entertainment. If you are like this now, what are you gonna be like when you are older? Let it go man. People are dying everyday and you went to all this effort. Sad. Its people like you that have got the music industry in the mess it is. By the way, can you sing? He earns a living from it, just because he’s no longer in the charts, he’s failed? He’s failed to follow the industry and do what they want. He’s succeed by bringing up his family doing what he loves. Problem is, if you are not on tv its assumed you failed? all about celebrity, image and not about the music. Like i said, you have no idea…

Go make the same effort for something that is worthwhile….

    • I didn’t once state that One Direction are the best talent this country has to offer.
As for ‘all of this effort’, I wrote a 439 word blog. I don’t think I could’ve saved anybody’s life in the 15 minutes it took me to write. But still, sorry.
I’d also like to apologise on behalf of the people like me, who have ‘got the music industry in the mess it is today.’
No, I cannot sing. It isn’t really relevant though, is it?
It is my opinion (Which I assume is shared by the huge amount of people who have retweeted my blog) that Steve has failed in his career in music. As I said in my blog, he released a second album, which failed to make the UK Charts. If that’s not failing, what is?
In my opinion (Please note, in my opinion) he is incredibly bitter towards the music industry, and has decided to take it out on an 18 year old singer. To me, that’s a bit sad in itself.
      Have a fantastic Christmas.
      Josh.
Ps. I think you meant ‘he has succeeded by bringing up his family doing what he loves’, not ‘he’s succeed by bringing up…’

First thing I’d like to say is sort out your spelling and grammar, I’m a 17 year old girl (like, duh, of course, I’m a One Direction fan!) and I can write better than you.
Is “little freak” the best you can come up with to insult someone who wrote a totally valid argument? Mature.
I’m not one to be stereotypical but my “50 year old man”-dar is going crazy right now, seeing as they’re the only people keeping Steve Brookstein (WHO?!) “in the music industry”.
If you had any knowledge of the industry you would know that One Direction are current and will sell records upon records, unlike Steve who, as stated, is basically a failed artist.
Yeah, I agree, Louis’ voice isn’t the best, but listen to some of the acts that you probably adore, they aren’t the most amazing singers. To be a successful artist, singing isn’t the main point. One Direction have the personality, the looks, the charisma and it just so happens that they do have some strong singers in the band.
What Steve did was really smart. Who even gave a damn about him before he started tweeting about Louis? Good PR work there, Steve, real good. It got him publicity and he probably got more mentions in a day because of his foul attitude towards a member of one of the biggest bands in the country at the minute than he ever has in his life.
But, who cares, I’m a 17 year old girl so OBVIOUSLY my opinion on anything is invalid.
Have fun listening to Steve playing in Pizza Express and Cafe Nero when One Direction are selling out arenas, touring the country and living the dream.
      No really, HAVE FUN!
